    Celebration at Black Ship Festival in Shimoda

    May 18 - The U.S. Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission Kurt Tong congratulated the people of Shimoda, Shizuoka, for the city’s historic role in establishing modern U.S.-Japan relations, commemorating the 1854 signing of the Treaty of Peace and Amity. He also participated in the parade with Mayor Shunsuke Kusuyama of Shimoda.

  • Dogwood Tree Initiative in the Tokai Region

    In 1912, Japan gave the United States a gift of 3,000 cherry trees as a token of friendship between the two nations. In commemoration of the gift, the people of the United States today are offering 3,000 dogwood trees to the people of Japan through the Friendship Blossoms Initiative. Three planting ceremonies were held in Aichi and Mie in the spring of 2013.
