The Rise of China: Risks and Opportunities

Nagoya, March 23 - Doctor Denny Roy, senior fellow at the East West Center discussed the rise of China with an audience at Aichi University’s Kurumamichi campus.

During his talk, Dr. Roy pointed out both the risks and opportunities that will most-likely accompany China’s rise to become a top regional player.

On the U.S.-Japan relations, Dr. Roy stated that, as China becomes more powerful, the U.S.-Japan security relationship will become more important.

He said that this sentiment was best illustrated by Secretary Clinton’s visit to Japan as the first stop of her Asian tour in February.

Following Dr. Roy’s talk, Modern Chinese Studies Professor Goro Takahashi provided comments on the rise of China.

Dr. Takahashi stated that it is important to view the rise of China a regional power using a long-term point of view.

Aichi University and the Aichi University International Center for Chinese Studies cosponsored this event.
