Smart Power in America’s Foreign Policy

Nagoya, May 13 - Scott Bates, vice president and senior fellow at the Center for National Policy, spoke to an audience of students and local professionals about the Obama Administration’s use of “Smart Power” in security and foreign affairs.

He covered the Administration’s employment of smart power to address issues including the rise of China, international trade, the North Korea’s nuclear development, Russia’s changing global roles and the U.S.-Japan security relationship.

Mr. Bates commented that the tone of American foreign policy has already significantly changed since the Obama Administration started- contending that the Administration is focusing more on long term enduring foreign policy interests rather than focusing all of its efforts primarily on Middle East and South Asian security issues.

Nagoya University Foreign Policy Professor Haruo Iguchi moderated this event.
