Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama and the Power of the Spoken Word

Kanazawa, June 1 - Dr. Fred Kaplan, distinguished professor emeritus of English at Queens College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, spoke to students at Kanazawa University about the oratory skills of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.

Comparing the communication skills of both Presidents, Dr. Kaplan highlighted their rare capacity to write most of their own speeches.

He compared President Lincoln’s entreaties to the South to remain in the Union before the American Civil War, and President Obama’s speeches on important issues including race relations in the U.S.

Kanazawa University Faculty of Letters Professor Masami Yuki moderated this event.
