Professor Kent Calder on U.S.-Japan Relations

Nagoya, June 8 - Professor Ken Calder, director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, and the Japan Studies head at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, spoke to students and faculty at Nagoya University about reviving the U.S.-Japan alliance.

Discussing how the world has changed since the U.S. and Japan formed their alliance at the beginning of the Cold War, Dr. Calder called for both countries to proactively work to renew the bilateral relationship in the 21st century.

Highlighting America’s relationships with Germany and the UK, Dr. Calder suggested that the U.S. and Japan enhance their nongovernmental bilateral connections; pointing out the success of the Marshall Fund and Fulbright program in Europe.
